Instant Meditation

I ran across a website today that promises “deep, instant meditation.” They begin their spiel with these words, “Did you know that people who meditate are much happier and healthier than everyone else? It‘s true. And they have greatly extended life spans, too.”

Their contention was that anybody could achieve the deepest level of meditation and achieve true piece by pushing a button.  Of course they wanted you to buy this button that had a suction cup backing. That’s so you could stick it on your window, or bathroom mirror, or car windshield and take your meditation device with you wherever you go.

Along with their exclusive, patented stick-on meditation button you can receive risk free (there’s a red flag for you) their exclusive mp3 packages and pay anywhere from $29.95 to $89.95. Now before you start snickering consider what these products will do for you. You can achieve  “perfect mental and emotional balance”, “perfect equilibrium”, “dramatically superior functioning” (That alone is worth the price of the premium package.), and synchronize your brain waves (I’ve been meaning to do that) and a whole bunch more.

I’ve got a better deal.  Repeat after me: “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is stayed on Thee because he trusts in You.” Meditate on that for awhile. It’s from Isaiah 26:3. It’s absolutely FREE. Meditate on it. That means thinking about it, repeating it, writing it down, analyzing it, praying it back to God, praying it for yourself. Praying it for others. Memorizing it. Calling it back out at any time or any place during the day.  God promises us His word will do everything these Internet snake oil salesmen tell you they can do if you’ll send them 89 bucks! God is offering all His benefits for FREE!

If you don’t particularly care to meditate on Isaiah 26:3, pick one of more than 31,000 other verses in the Bible. Any one you choose promises to do the same thing as their magic button. For instance I meditate on Psalm 25:4-5: “Show me your ways, O Lord. Teach me your paths. Guide me in Your truth and teach me. For you are God my Savior and my hope is in you all day long.”

No thank you, snake oil salesmen. Why would I spend $89 bucks with you, when I can spend a few minutes with God each day in His word and get exactly the same benefits for FREE!
