When my grandmothers used to can fruits and vegetables, the first thing they did was sterilize the jars. Canning jars must be completely sterile. Eating canned good food from un-sterile jars can cause serious illness even death.
In God’s canning process with us, the first thing He does is make our vessels completely sterile. That’s what Christ did for us on the Cross. We are free from the law of sin and death and the law. We are completely clean.
After my grandmas made their Ball jars sterile, they filled the jars completely, all the way to the top. They didn’t leave any room for anything else. They had to make no foreign substance or air mixed with their fruits and vegetables.
After God totally cleanses us, by our faith in Jesus Christ, He fills us. We are completely full. We are new. And we are filled with all the glory of Christ in the Holy Spirit. Lots of followers of Christ don’t understand this concept either. But we are filled completely with all God’s blessings and all of Christ in the person of the Holy Spirit. God’s word says that we are.
“…that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.”Ephesians 3:16-19
“And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,” Colossians 1:18-19
Since God made all His fullness to dwell in Christ, (His blessings, His riches, His grace, His mercy, His forgiveness, His peace et. al)…and since, as authentic followers of Christ we are in Christ, all the same blessings are available to us, in the fullness of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. We are filled to overflowing with Christ.
The final step in the canning process we’ll look at tomorrow is the sealing.
