It rang true for the Pharisees in Jesus’ day. It rings true today. Neither God’s law, nor God EVER changes.
The Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, DOMA, in June, which opened the door (or the floodgates) for gays to legally marry. The court’s justification hung on their interpretation of the due process clause in the 5th amendment.
But man’s law never trumps God’s law. The justices on the high court are all mortal. They are the final authority on man’s law. Their votes can change social policy, skew our moral compass, impact civil rights, legalize killing of unborn children. Time Magazine called the decision “one of the fastest Civil Rights shifts in the country’s history.” But it can not change God’s law.
But God does not change. Nor will God tolerate any effort by man to skirt his laws or make them more palatable, or conciliatory, to accommodate society’s spiraling trends towards apostasy and abandoning God. “God is not human, that he should lie, nor a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” Numbers 23:19 Striking down the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional is a blatant mockery of God.
Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Galatians 6:7-8
Humans do dumb things. Humans with no personal relationship with God do dumb things that impact their eternal destiny. Humans, like Pharisees, do things they think are right or good, but go against the law and heart of God.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow.” James 1:7
When Jesus confronted the Pharisees in Matthew 23 He condemned them,
Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. Matthew 23:27
When man went too far, and ignored God’s love and commandments long enough, God gave them over to their sins,
Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. Romans 1:24.
I wonder how much longer God’s longsuffering is. How much longer to you think He will tolerate our flagrant disobedience?
