Voices. They’re trying to run our lives.
From TV and radio to newspapers and Facebook and Twitter. Buy this vitamin supplement, get this car, this baby food, this dress, this diet program. Cure this. Prevent that. Clean this. Enhance your smile. Stop the spread. You’ll live longer, feel better, look younger, do more, get more.
The products and services they shout about are, of course, all proven in clinical trials to be the best of their kind on the market.
Even some preachers shout at us to do this, don’t do that, pray this way, don’t pray this way, witness to these folks, but not those, give this much, witness this way, don’t witness this way.
In addition to pastors, some well-meaning friends and relatives sometimes think they have divine insight into our circumstances. They know what to do to help us. And don’t mind badgering us with their insight.
When I feel overwhelmed by the pious voices of worldly reason, God brings to my memory one of His promises from Isaiah.
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21 (NIV).
It’s the voice of God. The voice of Truth. The voice of wisdom. It’s not a shout. It’s a whisper. From the God’s Holy Spirit. Always pointing me in the right direction when I listen to Him.
