“in a little while you will not see Me; and again a little while and you will see me because I go to the Father.” John 16:16
Christ just promised when He left He would send the Holy Spirit to be their Helper. He would convict the world of sin and guide the disciples into all truth. Jesus told them He would see them again. He told them they would be His witnesses and teach people what Jesus taught them.
Confused and confounded the disciples huddled together to figure out what Jesus meant by “in a little while.” Forget the miraculous things He promised them. Forget that He would leave them but would return. Forget Jesus revealing their future. The disciples would rather major on minor stuff. Figure out what Jesus meant by “in a little while”.
Do we do that sometimes? Do we prefer to focus on minutia rather than marvel at the miraculous hand of God at work around us? Do we focus more on the “right” denomination, the “right” beliefs, “right” Bible, and the “right” baptism than we do on the real message of the Cross?
Do we know the real message of the cross? If a stranger asked us to tell her the reasons we believe Jesus is our Lord and Savior. . .in two minutes. . .what would we say?
