“In Control” Vs. “Controlling”

controlWhen I was reading a commentary this week I learned the difference between God being in control and God controlling people and events.

I believe some folks have predestination wrong. They tell us God is a puppet master, controlling events and circumstance and people. In other words, we’re not really free to choose. All our choices have already been made, they say, by their puppet master god. That’s controlling.

But Scripture tells us God is “in control” — He is moving heaven and earth towards His ultimate purpose for us all.  I could fill pages with Scriptures that prove it, but let me share just a few:

The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble. Proverbs 16:4

The Lord of hosts has sworn: “As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand, Isaiah 14:24

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1

God gifted Adam and Eve with freedom of choice. We can choose to believe God or refuse to believe He is. Both choices have eternal consequences.
