Are you tired of trying to find acceptance or approval? Does it feel like you are on a Merry Go Round? Tired of the rat race, hamster wheel and competition? The search for recognition, approval, acknowledgement or favorable reception is daunting, frustrating, relentless and discouraging.
Looking for true unconditional acceptance outside of the Lord is like searching for the mythical unicorn, leprechaun or pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It doesn’t exist. We hope to find it. We yearn to have our heart filled with approval.
Most of the ways we look for approval, acceptance and recognition are temporal. They change and are never permanent or eternal. They may give us a temporary sense of recognition but what happens when it deteriorates changes or loses its value?
Our value can change at any given moment. Then what? The rug is pulled out from under our feet. We start sliding down the slippery slope of self loathing, discouragement and despair. We sit at the bottom and see another way to gain recognition and climb our way back to the top and start chasing another unicorn. Yuck.
It doesn’t have to be this way. You don’t have to believe these messages. There is a better way to find recognition and unconditional acceptance. Imagine how it would feel if you believe differently.
• Imagine believing I am okay instead of I am not okay
• Imagine believing I’m a good person instead of I’m a bad person
• Imagine believing I have worth instead of I have no worth
• Imagine believing I matter instead of I don’t count
Imagine the possibilities…
• What changes could you make?
• How would your choices be different?
• How would life be different?
We need to start believing how God sees us through the eyes of Jesus. This is what He says:
just as he chose us in him for the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he made us accepted in the Beloved. Eph. 1:4-6
Guided prayer: Father, I struggle to really believe you accept me unconditionally. It seems easier to try to get your acceptance through performance, religious rituals or perfection. Reveal to me your good pleasure in which you delight in me and see me as accepted in the Beloved. Show me the areas of unbelief. Reveal to me the lies I believe about acceptance and lead me by your truth into freedom and wholeness.
