Folks with low self-esteem usually have deep-seeded negative beliefs about the kind of person they are. They believe their opinions of themselves are true about their identity. They tell themselves they’re not good enough, or they’re a failure, or they think they’re inferior, or inadequate, or unlovable.  Their beliefs often impact many areas of their lives in harmful, negative ways. Albert Ellis in his book, The Self-Esteem Myth, claims that changing our thinking can change our opinion of ourselves.  His $10 dollar word for the solution to low self esteem is “Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy”. I agree that changing our thinking could help us reduce or eliminate low self-esteem, but not by rational emotive behavioral therapy. I think Philippians 4:8 could help us change our thinking:

 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

In addition to that very appropriate verse, why not jettison all our self-esteem. Get rid of it all. If we can reach a point in our journey when we claim no self-esteem at all, and get our self-worth from our relationship with Jesus Christ, we will be amazed at the transformative power no self-esteem (but all of Jesus esteem) can bring to our lives.

Jesus longs for us to get to the end of self. The more we ditch our self-esteem and rely on Jesus’ life to live through us and in us, our self-esteem issues will vanish, because Jesus will replace our self-esteem with His love and grace and blessings.

I am the vine, you are the branches; if a man abides in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit, apart from Me you can do nothing. John 15:5

 We are “branches”. We don’t move. We stay attached to the vine (Jesus) and His life flows through us (the branches). And we bear fruit for God’s kingdom.

 If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, (die to all our esteem in exchange for Jesus’ life) and take up his cross daily (Jesus’ call for our absolute and total surrender) and follow Me. Luke 9:23
