The World; Gravity; and God

Which gravity is stronger? Earth’s gravity or God’s gravity?

In fifth grade geography we learned that the force that attracts a body towardgravity2 the center of the earth is called gravity. Earth’s gravity keeps us grounded so we don’t float off into space. But God’s gravity has drawing power as well. For many folks God’s gravity is stronger and more effective than earth’s gravity.

For me on many days the force of the world’s gravity is stronger than God’s gravity.  Though God draws me daily into an intimate relationship with Him, I’m more often than I’d like, enticed by the world’s gravity. It is a strong, persistent, compelling force.

Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves
the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the
world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:15-17 NASB

The Bible warns us not to get pulled in by the gravity of what the world has to offer.  Although we are IN the world, we are not OF this world. I need to be reminded of that almost every day.

So, the question I’m pondering this week is this: Are my focus, my attention, my passions, my priorities and my treasures drawn more often by the world, or drawn to God?

I know how I’d answer that question. Do you?
