If I don’t deal with resentment that creeps into my head, it can become a passion and create a toxic, harmful state of mind.
When we feel resentment our bodies become physical wrecks. Stress hormones course through our veins. Resentment can cause the heart rate and blood pressure to rise to sometimes dangerous levels.
Resentment can cause stress on our digestive and immune systems as well. Resentment can cause the same flight-or-flight response we might feel if we were physically attacked or in fear for our lives.
People impacted by the resentment stress causes can’t think clearly. Our ability to reason and understand become impaired.
Stress leaves us a mess.
What can we do?
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
The underlined words in this verse reveal the one and only way to rid our hearts and minds of resentment–clinging dependence on God.
Lots of secular books and magazines have magic wand cures for resentment. Some may work for a moment. If they do they fade quickly.
The ONLY way we rid ourselves of resentment is by abiding in the presence of God. Being and abiding in His presence will bring His amazing peace to our hearts and minds and flush resentment from us.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27
