God’s Plumb Line

My dad did lots of carpentry work in his spare time. He was an excellent carpenter.

One of the tools he used when he needed a straight line was a plumb line. ID in ChristHe dropped the plumb bob and it always pointed towards the center of the earth. The line was exactly vertical (90 degrees) to the point where the plumb bob landed. He calledplumb line the line “true”.

Your word, O Lord, is eternal. It stands firm in the heavens. Psalm 119:89

God has a plumb line too. It’s called the Bible. It is always true.

Counterfeit Truth

When the FBI teaches new agents how to recognize counterfeit money, they teach them everything there is to know about real money. Because the agents know so much about what real money looks like, they learn to recognize counterfeit money at a glance.

The problem with many Christians is they don’t know enough of God’s truth to recognize counterfeit truth when it comes along. Early in my walk with the Lord some friends introduced me to some ideas from some strange fringe groups. On the surface what they were saying sounded plausible. In fact, at times the beliefs they shared

All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal. Psalm 119:160

made me ask questions about my own faith. Some of the things they believed were counterfeit truth. At that time I thought some of what they were saying might be true.

That’s how folks get hoodwinked into believing error, some things that might sound like sound doctrine aren’t.  They are error.

Do you ever have doubts like I did? Wonder whether what you believe is the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ?

How do you know? There’s only one way. The answer is reading God’s Word–Truth.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105

How often do you read God’s word to seek truth? Only when you have a problem or a question and need an answer? That is only a band aid.

The only way to know truth is to read God’s word every day. The habit of reading God’s word helps us learn the truth of God.

  1. We need to read God’s Word, meditate on it, consider its application and memorise it. Our first thought in any circumstance should be to ask what GOD says about it and ask Holy Spirit to bring to remembrance a definite Scripture as an anchor in which we can have confidence.

We serve an incredibly amazing God who wants to bless us and use us.
